Create or edit a category

News categories such as Product updates, Shipping or Tax let sellers filter the News. This form creates or changes a category. You set its name in each language and publish the names that are ready. You also choose whether sellers see it, and you add an icon.

Open it from News › Categories, with Create category or with Edit in a category row.

The Create news category tab, opened with Create category in the Categories section of the News page. At the top are the heading "Create news category", Cancel and the primary button "Create". The Translation card holds the highlighted "Name" field, filled with "Returns", the button "Apply translation" under Status, and the language list with English and German, both named "Returns" because the English name is copied into untouched languages. 1. In the News list, select Categories, then Create category.
  2. Type the Name in English, for example Returns. It is copied into every language you have not changed.
  3. Select Apply translation to publish English. The button changes to Translation applied.
  4. Translate and publish the other languages, or leave them as drafts.
  5. Leave the visibility switch on, add an icon if you like and select Create. "News category created." appears, and the category is added at the end of the list.

If a language has no name, the form jumps to it and marks the field with "Name is required". If a language is still a draft, a warning asks once before saving. It is titled "Save with draft translations?" and lists the drafts under Draft languages. Cancel returns to the form, and Save anyway saves.

Select a language in the list. Green languages are published, and red ones are drafts. Type the name and select Apply translation.

The Edit news category tab for "Tax", opened with "Edit" in its table row while English is selected on the News page. The Name field shows "Tax" and the button under Status reads "Translation applied", greyed out because English is published. In the language list English is green, and the highlighted German entry, "Steuern", is red: the German name is still a draft, so sellers reading German see the published English name until the German one is applied. The Edit news category tab for "Tax", opened with "Edit" in its table row while English is selected on the News page. Category names are published per language, like article texts. A draft name falls back to English for sellers.

Each language of a category name has its own status

Example: Tax is published in English, and Steuern is a German draft. German sellers see Tax until Steuern is published. Any change to a name sets that language back to draft.

Where
Metadata card, labelled Visible.
What
On by default. Off hides the category from the sellers’ filter and from the category badges on articles. Staff with access to News still see it and can still tick it on articles. The note under the switch reads "Visible categories can be returned by News APIs and assigned to articles."
Why
Prepare a category, or retire one, without touching the articles filed under it.
The Metadata card of the category "Webinars", with the description "Shared category settings apply across every language." The highlighted switch next to "Visible" is off, and the note reads "Visible categories can be returned by News APIs and assigned to articles." Why can sellers not filter by my new category?

Section titled “Why can sellers not filter by my new category?”

Sellers see a category only when it is visible and its name is published in their language or in English. Only categories of articles they can see are useful in the filter. Publish at least the name in English and keep the visibility switch on.

Can I hide a category that articles already use?

Section titled “Can I hide a category that articles already use?”

Yes. Hidden categories stay on the articles, but sellers no longer see them in the filter or as badges. Staff with access to News can still assign them. Switch the category on again to show it everywhere.

Does hiding a category change the order of the others?

Section titled “Does hiding a category change the order of the others?”

No. A hidden category keeps its place in the sort order. Only sellers stop seeing it. When you switch it back on, it reappears at the same position in their filter.

What do German sellers see when the German name is a draft?

Section titled “What do German sellers see when the German name is a draft?”

They see the category name that is published in English. As soon as the German name is published and the category is saved, German sellers see the German name instead.

Why did my published German name become a draft again?

Section titled “Why did my published German name become a draft again?”

Any change to a language’s name sets it back to draft. Select Apply translation again to publish the corrected name, then save the category.

In the News list, open Categories and use the red Delete in the category’s row, then confirm. The category and its translations are removed from every article. Articles left without any category need a new one the next time they are saved.

Use the up and down arrows in the Sort order column of the category table. Each click saves the new order immediately, and sellers see categories in this order.

Did my icon change although I pressed Cancel?

Section titled “Did my icon change although I pressed Cancel?”

On an existing category, an uploaded or deleted icon is saved the moment you confirm it. That happens before you save the form. Cancel only discards changes to names, status and visibility.

SymptomWhat to check
"Name is required"A language has no name. The form jumped to it.
Save stays greyNothing has changed yet.
"News category could not be saved."The category was deleted meanwhile, or the connection failed. Reload the News list.
A hidden category still appears in the article editorExpected. Staff with access to News can assign hidden categories, and sellers do not see them.
